Current Center projects

One of the core objectives of the cooperation in the Center Integrated Business Applications is the definition and implementation of consortium R&D projects together with the enrolled members of the Center and selected partner institutes of RWTH Aachen University.

This infrastructure enables on the one hand the development and demonstration of prototypes for the visualisation of new possibilities of operational application systems and on the other hand the mutual exchange of partners.

MARKET4.0 – A Multi-Sided Business Platform for Plug and Produce Industrial Product-Service Systems

The Center Integrated Business Applications is taking part in this project as a consultant and system integrator. We are developing concepts and templates to simplify the onboarding of e.g. ERP systems into the Smart Connected Supplier Network (SCSN). ERP suppliers who join MARKET4.0/SCSN, connect their own customers with a large number of potential business partners. Smaller companies, in particular, benefit from their own visibility within the platform. The name of our sub-project – “EDI Multiply” reflects this multiplier effect. The final development of our own demonstrator integrated into our IT landscape shows the feasibility of on-boarding, for us, as an SME.

LegoCPS2Go – Optimization of planning specifications using MTM

Despite the implementation and realization of Industry 4.0 potentials, manufacturing companies often have problems with the determination of target times and cycles. Based on the existing CPS2Go Lego-Case in the ERP Innovation Lab, the center project aims to demonstrate the advantages of a systematic and digitalised determination of standard times and cycles using the MTM system solution TiCon4. Within the scope of the project, the mapping of the Lego case’s target times using an MTM analysis, the illustration of the advantages of the TiCon4 for clocking out the assembly line of the CPS2Go demonstrator as well as the development of a presentation scenario are to be realised.

Smart production – the importance of the right data

The Centre and the Deutsche MTM-Gesellschaft Industrie- und Wirtschaftsberatung GmbH are developing new training concepts and demonstrators for the efficient determination of planned times in production based on joint experience.

Process Mining in production

Process Mining forms the interface between Data Science and Business Process Analysis and enables the identification of improvement potentials in business processes through analysis possibilities from the field of Data Science. The object of analysis is event logs, which are collected in large quantities in IT systems within each process chain. The information from these logs has mostly remained unused so far. With Process Mining, companies have the possibility to visualise the actual processes from these log files based on the events from their IT systems, to draw conclusions about bottlenecks, process loops and other process weaknesses and to identify deviations between target and actual processes.

RTLS 3.O – Contactless operation of ERP systems (follow-up project)

The RTLS 3.0 Center project represents a further development of the already completed RTLS 2.0 project. Compared to the previous project, a more complex product will be manufactured and several other technologies can be integrated to demonstrate the further potential of Industry 4.0 applications and synergy effects.

RTLS 2.0 – Operating ERP systems contactless

By using Real-Time Location Sensors (RTLS) and RTLS tags with ERP system connection, a feedback system is automated. The direct assignment of a workpiece, process parameters, tool and position simplifies the documentation considerably and thus also improves the informative value of the order progress.

The RTLS 2.0 research project aims to demonstrate further Industry 4.0 potentials. The focus is no longer exclusively on the automated feedback of process times using a real-time location system. Instead, the combination of different technologies (RFID and RTLS) is to be presented in a complementary manner. Also, the consideration of different variants and employees, as well as automated storage, are at the project forefront.

Industry 4.0 – Business Application Navigator

In the course of the fourth industrial revolution and increasing digitalisation, companies are increasingly relying on support from business application systems. In this context, the “best-of-breed” approach, in particular, is driving the trend towards no longer using a monolithic system landscape to control the company, but rather to use small special applications for specific company tasks. Companies are thus faced with the challenge of how to efficiently use a multitude of possibilities to support corporate tasks.

Under the title “Industry 4.0 – Business Application Navigator” (I40 – BAN), an analysis methodology is summarised which enables a company to first take an up-to-date inventory of the current system landscape to identify concrete fields of action on this basis, the implementation of which leads to an increase in efficiency in the management of the company.

CPS2Go – Basis for the user-center in the Cluster Smart Logistik

Industry 4.0 offers far-reaching potential in the area of business application systems. It is necessary to create an environment which makes available the representation of all capabilities to use and call up these possibilities. CPS2Go offers such a learning environment for the demonstration of potentials of operational application systems. Within the scope of the consortium research project, the conception and design of a prototypical learning environment will be realised in different steps.

Using a modular order processing process, the information needs of a company should be completely mapped starting from the customer enquiry up to the dispatch. Besides, the physical table including sensor technology will then be set up in the ERP Innovation Lab. On this basis, various business application suites can be applied.

Do you know when nothing happens? – Real-time capable order processing

The demonstrator for real-time order processing makes the tracking of production orders a tangible experience, and this in three ERP systems. Represented by three assembly trolleys, production orders can be moved through production. Through the integration of sensor technology, all relevant times, including transport times and waiting times, are transmitted to the ERP systems in real-time and event-controlled. In this way, transparency can be created regarding the status of production and individual orders.

The use-case was presented at the Hannover Messe 2016 (25th – 29th April 2016) and can also be seen in Aachen in the Smart Logistics Cluster on RWTH Aachen Campus.
